After Hurricane Sandy, Coney Island's Future Hangs In The Balance

It may not be as bad as the Jersey Shore, but Hurricane Sandy also hit Coney Island’s amusement district pretty hard.
Days later, much of the fabled boardwalk – both by the amusement district and elsewhere -- is covered several inches deep in sand.
Parts of Luna Park, Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park and the Scream Zone today were also covered in sand from the storm surge.
Fencing along parts of these amusement parks were ripped apart by the storm.
The beach was cluttered with trash and furniture – likely from nearby homes in Seagate, which was hit extremely hard.
Preliminary assessments showed no structural damage to the landmark rides – the Cyclone Rollercoaster, Wonder Wheel and Steeplechase, city officials told the Post. However, there is significant damage to the decking of Steeplechase Pier that will need to be replaced.
While most the rides are intact, nearly all of their electrical systems were damaged by a surge of up to seven feet of seawater and will have to be repaired.
Boardwalk shops fared better than the rides but some still reported damage.
Diana Carlin, owner of Lola Star boutique, tweeted “good news: the interior of the Lola Star boardwalk boutique is totally fine! I cried tears of relief!”
However, there's "bad news." Carlin’s says her new Surf Avenue store is “totaled.”
“I can't even comprehend how such destruction occurred,” she tweeted.
Operators at Tom’s Restaurant said their boardwalk shop survived in good shape.
Meanwhile, shops along Surf Avenue like the main branch of Nathan’s Famous was closed and fixing extensive flood damage.
City officials said it's too early to give cost estimates on damage.
